CHICAGO – The College of Chicago Ladies’s Athletic Affiliation introduced its crew and departmental awards for the 2022-23 educational 12 months. The 119th-annual WAA awards celebration was held at Worldwide Home.
WAA was initially based in 1904 and advanced from a corporation that promoted intramural alternatives to the letterwinner’s group for varsity ladies. The aim of the WAA is to “encourage shut relationships between the ladies athletes of the College of Chicago so that they could work collectively as a physique to advertise ladies’s athletics.”
Gertrude Dudley Medal – Grace Hynes (Basketball)
- Introduced to the excellent senior athlete for management and talent in ladies’s athletics. This award is called for Gertrude Dudley, the primary Chairman of the Division of Bodily Schooling – Ladies’s Division. Miss Dudley served the College from 1898-1935.
Patricia R. Kirby Award – Leah Ulrich (Cross Nation / Observe & Area)
- Introduced yearly to a feminine senior student-athlete, who – by her participation in a number of sports activities and/or intensive help of a number of College of Chicago groups, her management within the Ladies’s Athletic Affiliation or important management of her personal crew, and her exemplary service to the campus group – actually honors the legacy of the award’s namesake, Pat Kirby. This award was established to honor Patricia R. Kirby who coached badminton, basketball, softball and volleyball. Coach Kirby, who retired in 1989, was instrumental within the improvement of girls’s athletics at UChicago.
Mary Jean Mulvaney Scholar-Athlete Award – Katarina Birimac (Cross Nation / Observe & Area)
- Introduced to the senior blanket winner with the best junior and senior grade level common. This award was established to honor Mary Jean Mulvaney, former Chairman of the Division of Bodily Schooling and Athletics and a nationwide chief within the improvement of girls’s athletics. Miss Mulvaney, who retired in 1989, was at all times pleased with the educational and athletic dedication of our student-athletes.
Edith Ballwebber Awards
- Introduced by the Graduate Ladies’s Athletic Affiliation to a member of every class for his or her complete contribution to the athletic program. The award standards for choice are complete contribution to the athletic program as outlined by athletic efficiency, crew management, initiative, enchancment and contributions to the WAA. Edith Ballwebber directed ladies’s athletics at Chicago from 1937 to 1967. Beneath her course, Play Days continued to realize in reputation till the onset of girls’s intercollegiate play.
